Oil Painting, Beginning/Intermediate, Thursdays PM

This class meets for 8 consecutive weeks. Class size: 4 min, 15 max. Ages 16 and up

24 hours of instruction, $8.29/hr

Thursdays 6:30-9:30PM, First class is 5/23/19

This course will introduce the beginning/intermediate oil painter to color theory, blending, values, layout, and design all with the focus toward completing a final project of the student’s own choosing.

*Advanced students are welcome to enroll as a refresher or just to use the studio with the option to ask the instructor for advice when needed.

Supply list: Students should procure the following list of supplies and bring them to the first day of class:

  • Odorless Turpentine - ½ c in a small jar with lid for class clean up

  • Palette (paper pad, wood, or glass)

  • Oil paint (white, black, red, yellow, blue, and brown) (helpful additions warm and cool of each color, and purple, burnt sienna, orange, and green)    

  • Canvas panels 8 x 10 (need 6) for weeks 1-6  

  • Canvas size for week 7 (continued through week 8) is your choice

  • Brushes (for oil paints – soft and bristle (flat and round) at least 2 of each  

  • Brushes (extra liner and fan)

  • Palette knife

Beginning/Intermediate Oil Painting Syllabus

Week 1 ~ Color theory, mixing of secondary colors and their values and how to

                  cleanup after a painting session.

                  (abstract painting)

Week 2 ~ Blending of colors within a shape and sharp and hard edges

                   (copying a Master’s painting)

Week 3 ~ Focus on layout, focal point, and design

                  (landscape painting from photograph)

Week 4 ~ Paint with black and white only to concentrate on value changes

                  (animal painting)

Week 5 ~ Compare values that hues represent 

                 (paint week 4’s photograph with all the values and hues)

Week 6 ~ Focus on ways to straight lines

                  (city scene painting)

Week 7 & 8 ~ Independent final project

                   (guidance when needed)

Refund / Class credit policy: You may request a refund up to the second scheduled class and before the third class meets. Your refund will be for the class fee less the classes you attended and the $20 processing fee we are charged by the credit card processor. Notify the instructor or send an email. You may choose a refund or a credit toward another class.
